As foster parents, we often put others’ needs before our own. The children in our care need us to love and protect them and for the most part, we know how to do this. But how often do we take the time to nurture ourselves?
Parenting is hard work even under the best of circumstances and foster parents face their own unique situations.
Visits with biological parents may have repercussions lasting for hours or days.
Bio parents sometimes cancel their visits at the last minute. If a visit does take place, it is difficult for the children to understand why they can’t go home to be with their mom or dad. Even very young infants exhibit altered sleep patterns and behaviors after a visit.
Foster parents pick up the pieces and comfort broken hearts to the best of their ability.
We hope that by providing material and emotional support, we can help ease some of the burden. Our vision is to develop a group of volunteers who could:
- Provide a meal for the family on a regular basis
- Assist with child care in the home while foster parents are present
- Help with homework
- Check in by telephone on a regular basis with a specific family
- Assist with household chores such as lawn care, laundry, cleaning
- Run errands or go grocery shopping
Not everyone is called to be a foster parent, but we are each capable of doing something to help foster children. What is your calling?
Will you be part of our village and surround a foster family with love and support?
