The Foster Closet participated in our first event recently with Kind Hearts for Kids, a nonprofit organization in Bourne. Kind Hearts also supports foster, kinship and adoptive families.

Kind Hearts for Kids held a Summer Carnival and BBQ at the Indianhead Resort in Plymouth.

About 100 children enjoyed free games (with prizes!) and activities such as a bouncy house, dunk tank, horseback rides and more. There was delicious food and even an ice cream truck. The weather was beautiful and and there were smiles everywhere.

The Foster Closet brought summer items to give away. The major draw was a large selection of new swimsuits and beach towels. We also gave away swim diapers and sun hats for the little ones.

The kids got to choose their own swimsuits..this may not seem like much, but for a child from a troubled home, it’s a big deal.

We collected the items for the giveaway from our generous community supporters. Volunteers on site helped with the “shopping” experience. The Foster Closet has an amazing group of volunteers who help in every way possible and we truly appreciate them!

Seeing the parents who attended this event and how they interacted with their children made me realize how important good role models are to children.

Many of the adults in attendance brought several children, sometimes 3 or more who all seemed to be the same age. Caring for someone else’s child requires love and patience and the ability to multi-task. These families seemed to be doing these things with ease.

We are committed to finding more ways for foster families to get together. Providing material goods is important, and so is tending to the emotional health of foster families. We will be hosting a back-to-school event for foster/caregiver families in August – check back here and on Facebook for details!
